Moving to Kenya

There is so much to take care of when planning and executing your move into Kenya such that you can be taunting to follow all the procedures. Capital Moving is pleased to offer this handy service to make your moving efficient. We relieve you of the daunting task of undertaking custom clearance. We also take responsibility of ensuring that your households arrive safely and in good condition to your final residential destination in Kenya.

Important Documents

  • Original passport, if issued within last two years the old passport is also required.
  • Work permit for none Kenyan citizens.
  • Insurance certificate.
  • Invoice of electrical items and serial numbers.
  • Inventor in English, valued and detailed showing the number of packages and in triplicate.

Custom Regultions

  • Owner of the goods may be needed during the clearance.
  • Goods are subject to 100% customs verification except for diplomats.
  • Used household goods and personal effects are duty free for returning Kenya citizens provided they have resided outside Kenya for a minimum of two years and effects are imported within three Months of owner’s arrival.
  • None Kenya citizens (first time arrivals) are permitted to import used household goods and personal effects duty free within three Months of work permit being issued.
  • Household goods must have been in owner’s possession for at least one year prior to import. If new duty will be charged at current rate.
  • Kenyan citizens who have not resided for more than two years outside Kenya are not entitled to import used household goods and personal effects duty free.

Restricted Items

  • Alcoholic beverages.
  • New items (may require Import License and are subject to payment of custom duties and taxes).
  • Fabric pieces.
  • Trade goods or goods for sale.
  • Aircraft and vessels of all kinds.
  • Used machinery.
  • All computers new or old (except under diplomatic status) or unless imported by a student in computer studies.

Prohibited items

If any of the above items are included in your shipment, they will either be shipped back to your origin country or abandoned. Additional costs for either option will be charged to the customer.

  • Weapons, silencers, ammunitions, toy guns and explosives, including tear gas.
  • Firearms require a certificate to be issued by Nairobi Firearms Bureau for import.
  • Plants, seeds, bulbs, fresh fruit and vegetables unless a permit is obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture stating plants are free from disease.
  • Pornographic material.
  • Drugs.
  • Political literature.
Motor vehicle

First time arrivals to Kenya and returning Kenya citizens residing outside Kenya for at a minimum of two years are permitted to import one auto duty free provided:-

Ensure that

  1. Auto is more than three months old and has been registered in owner’s name for more than two months.
  2. Auto is more than 2,500 cc.
  3. Auto is not sold within 12 months of import.
  4. Owner’s work permit has been approved for first time arrivals to Kenya.
  5. Owner’s is 18 years of age and above.

Documents Required

  • Import Declaration Form (IDF), Clean Report (CR), and Clean Report Finding (CRF).
  • Authority to import vehicle letter.
  • Log book.
  • Certificate of Registration (indicate chassis and engine number, first date of registration and engine capacity).
  • Certificate of local value.
  • Passport (if issued within last two years, the old passport is also required).
  • Customs C15 Form.
  • New auto require invoice bearing engine and chassis number.
  • Work permit.
Your Pets

Important

  1. Import permit must be obtained from the Veterinary Department at Kabete, Nairobi prior to shipping.
  2. Up to date Vaccination Certificate from country of origin must be provided on arrival.
  3. Dogs and cats are exempt from Value Added Tax but are dutiable.
  4. Birds and their eggs are prohibited.
